Other residents of Windy Meadow Farm
Aside from the Suris and pyrs, windy Meadow Farm is home to an assortment of creatures, and still growing!
The newest additions are two female Angora Goats: Macie and Taylor, named by Sara in honor of her two best friends. We hope to breed then this spring. We will be blending their wool with some of our alpaca fiber.
The ducks arrived, first only four, one Easter for the grandkids. As they grew so did Cinda’s attraction to them. John has sent off for day old ducklings for various breeds. They give us hours of pleasure watching their antics on the pond and are always a hit with visiting children who love to feed them.
With the acquisition of a large incubator and eggs from friends or EBay, there are always birds hatching and in the case of pheasants and bob white quail, being released. The chickens are Delawares, and endangered breed, which are very friendly and easy to keep, producing lots of brown eggs for friends and family.
By buying eggs on EBay, we have sought to build a flock of Red Bourbon heritage turkeys, another endangered breed. Turkeys being turkeys it has not been very successful. We presently have 4 hens out of a hatch of 11chicks.
First off, John has never been a cat person. Having said that, we were losing feed to mice in the barn, too much feed, and the sparrows were making their “mark “ on the barn as well. Conversations took place about getting a barn cat. Well, soon one turns into a couple. The several, now there are 6 cats in the barn guarding the feed, playing with the puppies, sleeping nestled in Kodi’s thick fur and jumping with the grandchildren from hay bale to hay bale in the hay mow. Fewer mice and sparrows now…
Finally the pond is full of perch, bluegill, bass and catfish. The kids and grandchildren love fishing!
